Colleges and universities across the country are faced with significant cost, safety, and liability issues associated with hazardous chemical and material purchasing, storage, and waste disposal. In 2010, the Office of Environmental Health and Safety (OEHS) at a major New Hampshire university established a strategic initiative to reduce the quantity and toxicity of hazardous materials at the university. The university hired GeoInsight to develop a Hazardous Materials Management Plan (HMMP) to outline policies, procedures, and strategies to help achieve this goal.
The draft program content was developed by GeoInsight and finalized in working group meetings between GeoInsight personnel and key university stakeholders. The final HMMP was published on the university website and GeoInsight created an on-line training program so that all campus personnel would become familiar with the program. The HMMP will help the university maintain compliance with regulations, increase consistency with use of their inventory program, and provide an opportunity to recognize innovation for minimization efforts.
